Fun fact about me: I love television. I watch tv almost as much as I read. Almost.
Because good storytelling is good storytelling, and I'm always up for a good story. So, when I found a couple books on two writers of some of my favorite shows, I had to read them. Which brings me to my May book recommendations theme: women of television.

The Women of Amy Sherman-Palladino
Gilmore Girls, Bunheads, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. We all love these fast-talking, quippy dramedies. And all the things about these shows that we love? Courtesy of Amy Sherman-Palladino. In this collection of essays, tv critics and fans of these shows analyze what about the leading ladies in these dramatic comedies makes them so unique, why these shows continue to endure and find new audiences, and why these fictional women are so beloved. Written with wit and emotion, I couldn't put it down.

Just the Funny Parts
When I was younger, I loved watching Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. What I didn't know until recently was, the reason I loved select seasons of those two shows better than others was Nell Scovell. She created Sabrina and wrote for the first few seasons before stepping away. Then, on Charmed, she wrote for the show during seasons 3 and 4, but left halfway through the fourth season. There was definitely a Nell Scovell fingerprint on those shows. Her writing is spectacular - both thoughtful and entertaining. In this memoir, Scovell details her career in Hollywood from the very beginning, as often the only woman writer in the room. A hilarious account of life as a television writer, and a highly recommended read.
